Gratitude

From The Heart

From a compressed perspective, the world that we know
Could use lots of acceptance and understanding.
Glaringly apparent are the imbalances
Among health, wealth, and freedom. What are the chances
Of survival when there’s so much hate happening?
Spiritually, we have a long way to go.

That’s just one way of seeing things. There may be more,
But statistics interpret our reality.
If you have food, a place to sleep, and clothes to wear,
You are richer than most in the world. So is there
A reason to be grateful? Most definitely!
There is more than enough one can be grateful for.

If you’ve never experienced imprisonment,
Or the pangs of starvation, you’re more fortunate
Than one half billion people. If you can attend
A church meeting, not fearing it may be the end
Of existence, you have reason to celebrate.
Let the numbers enlighten you to some extent.

Treasuring our divinity means being in
A constant state of appreciation. Looking
For occasions to be joyful and in a state
Of sheer gratitude is the best way to create
A fulfilling life no matter what’s happening.
Making peace with where you are is how to begin.

Become Happy

Joy Is In The Mind

It is said that the average person loses
Their attention many times in just one minute.
Cumbersome are the thought patterns of people who
Fail to concentrate adequately. What they do
Is done with some anxiety mixed into it.
The heart may guide the way, but the mind refuses.

Researchers have done studies with monks who know how
To focus their attention. Their experience
Is substantial. Brain scans on them revealed a lot
Of frontal lobe activity when these monks thought
Of things like compassion and love that is intense.
They are also well trained in living in the now.

A control group of folk considered average
Were given the same brain scans. The shocking result
Indicated no activity in the brain.
With this bit of knowledge there is something to gain.
To acquire the monk’s brain is not that difficult.
There are practices in which we all can engage.

Thinking of unconditional love, compassion,
Or divinity, when they are focused upon
On a regular basis, will make one feel good.
Pay attention to life. It’s better understood
When the causes of fear, hate, and doubt are all gone
Thinking with emotion helps to get the job done.

The Hidden Dimension

Entering Other Worlds

Is there something in common in every culture
That creates within everyone the need for God?
Anyone who has experienced mystery
Knows that there’s a dimension that we cannot see.
The beauty of a mountain or sunset we laud
As the face of divinity. Yet are we sure?

The realization of wonder is something
That all people experience time and again.
The tremendous power of nature we behold
As a force greater than us that can’t be controlled.
We return to something but we cannot know when.
We are left with tons of clues for deciphering.

Throughout God’s evolution in our consciousness
There have been those of violence and compassion
And protectors of kings and queens and their campaigns.
Personification is still locked in our brains
To the degree that we may not ever be done
With the faces of God we create to excess.

God is a manifestation of energy
And the vehicle for it. Continuing war
Among world principalities over issues
Of our faith and anarchy can only confuse
What we know in our souls to be something much more
Than a situation where we act foolishly.

A Reason To Live

The Struggle To Not Die

Four A.M. and I’m lonely. Not much else is new.
Rain is forecasted, and it will last through the day.
To me, that is refreshing, for parched is my soul.
One more small separation would be nature’s goal
To protect each from others. I feel in the way
And too old to recover from my feeling blue.

There’s so much I could die about. Life given me
I have wasted on foolishness and causing harm.
My own filth is my dwelling. I’ve no energy
To move waste from this body… at least completely.
My estrangement from family should cause alarm.
People I know must look upon me with pity.

I’m said to be emotionally immature.
I digest all my labels as well as my food
Which gets stuck on the highway with each twist and turn.
A perpetual pluming disease I discern.
Medicine cannot help me. It comes as a rude
Slap to my face. I have but the choice to endure.

A bullet in slow motion is headed toward me.
Should I step out of danger if I think I can?
Reflexes must take over if they function well.
Is this life that I’m living one absolute hell?
I’m still here for some reason. I’ll stick with the plan
That I must have blind faith in. That’s how it must be.

Human Potential

The Flowering Of Racial Wisdom

Human beings are swinging like a pendulum
Between animal nature and divinity.
One moment, we are civil; the next, we are mean.
As long as the wild beast we are clearly is seen,
Our ascension spiritually cannot be.
Extinction by our own hands may be the outcome.

Processes fundamental conceived to dissolve
What is animal in us offer much relief
And a balance most vital to us as a race.
As we rise in the morning, the kingdom we face
Is of lack and survival. The worst of our grief
Penetrates to the soul, and we cannot evolve.

We’re the dog, bird, and snake, and all creatures below
On the rungs of life’s ladder as earth is its home.
After some work and practice, if someone pokes me,
The dog will cease its biting and be completely
In alignment not with the old stressful syndrome
But with peace and compassion – a winning combo.

It must happen in every human being, though.
When the rugged wild creatures that we have become
Do not find dissolution the natural way
We create our own hell that we are doomed to pay.
Animals become restful by beating the drum
Of connection and awesome potential to grow.
