Silent Night

Christmas Keys

With his fingers stretched over the old organ keys
Father Joe took a deep breath. He’d hoped it would be
A good night for practicing the song he would play
For the people of his village on Christmas day
But the old organ’s pipes were rusted completely.
Father Joe could do nothing but drop to his knees.

The bellows were mildewed. The old organ would wheeze
If it could, then go quiet. He’d hoped it would hold
Together until the organ builder arrived.
He was certain his people would not be deprived
Of his music. The story begins to unfold
When an old manuscript he had written he sees.

He had written a poem a few years before.
It was called “Silent Night” – a song of happiness.
He took it to a colleague. Together they came
Up with music for it and in Jesus’ name
It became a song sung by the world to express
Gratitude for the savior who people adore.

When the people arrived for the service they were
A bit puzzled by Father Joe with a guitar
And his dear friend, and as their two voice rang out
The church choir then joined in. It was without a doubt
A good night before Christmas. How thankful we are
That this story of co-creating did occur.
