The Neuroscience Of Mindfulness

Color Brain

Mindfulness is the practice of being aware
Of all the elements of the present moment
Without getting lost in the future or the past.
One can simply take in what’s perceived as contrast
And not be triggered by it. Be in the present
Where your power is. In inner peace you must care.

Mindfulness changes the neurobiology
Of fear by how the brain processes stimuli.
The brain stem and the limbic systems operate
Out of fear. They will too often try to dictate
What’s important in the moment and this is why
They will lead us right smack dab into misery.

What happens when we’re stressed is that information
Doesn’t reach the frontal cortex. It remains stuck
In that part of the brain that’s in survival mode
Constantly. And if no information is flowed
To the thinking brain then behavior runs amuck.
Mindfulness therefore is helpful to everyone.

The subcortical looping can be overcome.
Mindfulness strengthens the activation in the
Frontal cortex. If we can name the emotion
Then it’s deactivated. What will have begun
Is a process of rational activity
And the angst of the moment you will be free from.

If The Big Bang Is True

First Cause

The Big Bang is a theory. As science explains,
Everything came from nothing including the space
Between things. The expansion is still going on.
From this there are many conclusions to be drawn
All By Faith, however science cannot embrace
Such a notion. Its pseudo logic it maintains.

What exploded? Where did it come from? Why did it
Up and happen? There are many questions to ask
Of the scientist. Such questions are suited for
The spiritual seeker who maybe knows more
About what all the scientists cannot unmask.
But do not call them faithless. They would have a fit.

It’s just like a book is so much more than the ink
And the paper. It has lots of information.
More than just chemicals, a strand of DNA
Holds a library. We are much more than the way
Science sees us. It’s not that it can’t get things done.
It’s just that there’s resistance in how people think.

Some fourteen billion years ago something happened
That brought into existence matter, time, and space.
Did it happen all by itself? Or is there some
Divine consciousness that everything ushers from?
And can logic ever quantify divine grace?
Truth is something that anyone can comprehend.

Influenced By The Future You

From The Self Yet Becoming

A version of your future self does now exist.
In your mind’s eye, imagine how that one would be
Doing things differently and take careful note.
This idea may seem to some rather remote
But if you are open to being completely
In alignment this exercise can’t be dismissed.

Watch this self of the future and imagine how
It would feel about everything you’re doing now.
Imagine if that self is doing the same things
In the same way it’s done them. This pondering brings
On a flood of insight if you will but allow
The connection to happen. Do make it your vow.

More aligned with your passion your future self is.
Try to mimic in every way how it behaves.
It would be more the way you would want it to be.
Watch the differences and you will clearly see
All that it is that you’re doing that only enslaves
And propels you into over analysis.

Mirroring the behaviors of the future you
Pulls you in the direction of how things could be.
Rather than your remembering ways of the past
Which will anchor you to your prevailing contrast,
Information and images come easily
To help you on your journey in all that you do.

Fairy Rings

Circular Beingness

The term ‘organism’ must be loosely defined.
When science studies nature it cannot include
The convergence of creatures that already do
Exist as sovereign beings. It must exclude too
Any mention of spirit. It is rather crude
In its fettered approach. In some ways it is blind.

What has come down through time are the legends that tell
Of the nature spirits and the elementals
Who, attracted by ‘fairy rings,’ meet to partake
Of the shifting of energies for the earth’s sake.
They take advantage of ethereal canals –
The mycelial networks that in the earth dwell.

There’s some truth to the stories. Beings that exist
Outside of our perception sometimes can be sensed
By some people when they are receptive and clear.
If one wants them to show up they just might appear
But society’s values are strongly against
Believing is such nonsense. Much wisdom is missed.

Nature is a vast network of information.
Many interconnections are made constantly.
Mushroom rings form the lenses that focus the light
Of total understanding for beings of sight
Into other dimensions there happen to be.
One cannot know the whole tale of how things are run.

One Simple Trait

Focused Intent

How do birds of prey find exactly what they want
As they scan countless acres of raw wilderness?
Nature gives them keen senses. Their infrared sight
Helps them track mammal urine in pitch black of night.
Extreme intent and focus they also possess.
Any creature below them they’re willing to daunt.

Andrew Carnegie, after he made great success,
Caught the ire of the government. They thought that he
Was engaged in illegal things. He proved them wrong.
When they asked him why his businesses were so strong…
“I can keep myself focused,” he said truthfully,
“On one thing for five minutes. I won’t go for less.”

School systems value information as ideal,
And too much floods the mind with what it does not own.
When attached to memory, I identify
With the things I remember and barely get by.
Knowledge is the true quest. Information alone
Is useless because it’s not the same as what’s real.

What too much information can do to the mind
Is severe Attention Deficiency Syndrome.
One loses the ability to take things in

Through the senses and consciousness. It’s such a sin.
To know that I know not much gets me close to home
In this world of deep data that traps humankind.

Accessories To Life

The Information Divide

By the time she’s fifteen all that she will have seen
Is a hundredfold more than what I at that age
Could have ever imagined. She knows everything.
The devices she uses skillfully will bring
Anything that is dreamed of right to center stage
With detailed information upon a touchscreen.

The Big Bang of Technology when it occurred
Made it so the whole world is fully connected
And able to communicate information
Faster than an eyeblink. Our minds are overrun
With crap loads of minutia. We’re constantly fed
By the marvel’s malevolence which is deferred.

I need not blow the whistle. I am an old fart
And the sound would be putrid by nose or by ear.
But I knew not of boredom when I was a child.
Everything did excite me. My spirit was wild.
Children find it difficult to hold something dear
When contact through a smartphone replaces the heart.

Most unprecedented is the current onslaught
Upon this generation, as never before
Have kids lived half their lives through the shortening years.
When all sense of true meaning in life disappears
It may get to the point where one can take no more.
It is urgent to counter such unhealthy thought.

There is something to live for. It’s not family,
My career, thoughts, nor feelings. The drama of these
Are abstracted creations played out in the mind.
To be touched by life is to be blessed by the kind
Gentle knowing within self. The accessories
Of my life consists of all else, as it should be.
